The Best Laid Plans .......................................
Life certainly can be surprising and throw some very curved balls!
Our original idea of crossing the Pacific in the 2016 sailing season has been "kiboshed" by Alec's serious ilness, and we are now in a state of Flux, living in a delightful granny cottage owned by our very good friends Lin and Lou Konyecsni in El Salvador.
The cruising community really came to our rescue when Alec was struck down with what was called an atypical pneumonia which got steadily worse, and for a while did not respond to treatment. It appeared to be eating away at his lung and leaving holes in the lung tissue. At first lung cancer was suspected, and then, even more frightening, necrotizing fasciitis. (Flesh eating bacteria which is very hard to stop)
However, after three weeks of non stop antibiotics delivered via intravenous, drip, a blood transfusion, two thoracic surgeries and many, many dollars, he is finally out and recovering, albeit very slowly. We discovered that he also has a heart condition called Atrial Fibrillation and an enlarged ventricle, possibly caused by this very long standing lung infection?
All the above means that we will need to sell our boat and become land based, hopefully in Spain. Watch this space!!
